NSW: Take out insurance Carr tells residents

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR is disturbed by the number of people whose homes areeither not insured, or under-insured.

But he's not ready to introduce compulsory home and contents cover although he sayshe is considering it.

The premier has been touring Sydney's fire-devastated southern outskirts, where severalhomes have been lost to bushfires this week.

Mr CARR says governments can't act as insurers of last resort, otherwise people wouldnot bother to take out insurance.

However Mr CARR says five families who lost their homes this week already have received$10,000 each in emergency grants from the Community Disaster Relief Fund.

A further 12 applications are in the pipeline.

A new $160 million data centre billed as a kind of cyber "Fort Knox" for IT companieshas opened in Sydney.

The British Global Switch Data Centre, at Ultimo in central Sydney, is one of the mostsecure data storage centres in Australia and the Australasian region.

It promises to create 65 direct jobs.

Speaking at yesterday's launch, NSW Premier BOB CARR said the facility is a hi-tech,high security electronic warehouse for Australia's fast growing internet, e-business andtelecommunications companies.

Vic: Man missing in boat mishap at Ocean Grove

A man's died after a boating mishap in the Barwon River at Ocean Grove, south west of Melbourne.

Police say the man disappeared just after 7 am, but details about the incident remain sketchy.

The spokeswoman says he was with another man who managed to swim to shore and raise the alarm.

A search by water police and Search and Rescue recovered the man's body about 8 am.

Vic: Second instalment of Ansett payments sent out

All retrenched Ansett workers will be paid their entitlements before Christmas.

Ansett administrator Andersen says money went out last night to 384 staff who were
offered or applied for redundancy.

It follows the first payments to 4,000 staff on Tuesday night.

A spokesman for ANDERSEN says the remaining 400-odd staff will be paid before Christmas.

The payments come from the $195 million in government funds released by the Federal
Court last week.

Fed: Ruddock turns to Carr for help in keeping gangs out

The federal government is calling on the New South Wales Premier to help establish
objective criteria aimed at keeping potential gang members out of Australia.

NSW Premier BOB CARR has described the federal immigration department as insensitive
to the problems faced by the state's police as a result of gang crime.

But Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK says he needs co-operation from state governments
and has criticised state ministers for ambushing him at consultation meetings.

Mr RUDDOCK's told radio 2GB he recognises there's a problem with gang crime.

But he says many gang members come to Australia as minors and only become involved
in gang activity after immigrating.

He's asking Mr CARR to help in the development of criteria that may help identify people
who could be of future concern.

peace in troubled areas.

Only Iraqi leader SADDAM HUSSEIN issued a call to arms, calling on Christians and Muslims
around the world to wage a holy war against Israel.

In the West Bank town of Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, tourists avoided the two-thousand
year anniversary of Christmas, after three months of Palestinian-Israeli violence which
has left 345 people dead.

In Indonesia, many Christians avoided Christmas Day services after a spate of fatal
church bombings on Christmas Eve.

Indonesian President ABDURRAHMAN WAHID has blamed forces intent on destabilising the
country for the attacks.

Pope John Paul II has also expressed dismay over the attacks which killed at least 15 people.

In his traditional Christmas Day message, the pontiff also lamented the endless streams
of refugees from conflicts around the world.

Britain's Queen ELIZABETH told a vast audience via television, radio and the Internet,
that she and many other people have been inspired by Jesus' teaching to treat others as
you would like them to treat you.
