QLD: Woolgrowers optimistic of improved market
BRISBANE, Dec 23 AAP - China was emerging as a growing market for Australian wool,
giving producers new optimism for 2000, a Queensland industry leader said today.
AgForce Sheep and Wool vice president Robert Pietsch said China recently reached agreement
with the United States about entering the World Trade Organisation.
"The key impact of this will be the simplification and transparency of China's import
quota system," Mr Pietsch said.
An agreement between China and the US would also strengthen America as a market destination
for woollen apparel, he said.
"The other plus is Chinese industry is talking to European Union officials and this
will increase its access to technology from Europe for more efficient wool-processing
equipment."
The end result could be an ongoing commitment by the Chinese textile industry to wool,
boosting Australia's exports, Mr Pietsch said.
